1) What were the real causes of the War of 1812? Was the declaration of war a “mistake,” or the result of deliberate policies by the new American political forces?

THe causes of the War of 1812 were that the British had still not left the forts up north and they were taking our ships still. The declaration of war was an attemp to get popularity with the new political forces, but it failed badly.

The War of 1812 was caused by hostilities many "war hawks" had with Britain. Also many New England merchants were angry that Britain kept stealing their ships because they were losing money. The British had not given any respect to America since it gained its independence and I feel that many people wanted to make the statement that we are a force to be reckoned with.

The War of 1812 was the War for Independence part II. So, the real cause of this war was we felt we wern't getting respect or our independece from Britian or France. Britian was taking our ships and they thought we wern't going to do anything about it. Everyone kept messing with us even though we were independent. I don't think this declaration of war was a mistake though.

I hope it's ok that I just keep adding on to everyone else. I agree with everyone in that we decided that Britan needed to learn a lesson but I also think that this was used to show other Countries such and France and Spain that we weren't gonna take crap anymore and that we were willing to fight for what our country. I don't think anyone took America completely serious until this war because it showed that we were serious and mature enough to handle our own problems and that we didn't need anyone elses help.

The War of 1812 had quite a few major causes. Napolianic Wars, the Chesapeake-Leopard "Affair", the Embargo Act, The Non-Intercourse Act, British Instigation of Indians, and War Hawks such as Henry Clas or John Calhoun were all the major causes. I don't think going to war was a mistake. We had good reasons and it was in our best interest to stop other countries from "bossing us around".

The real causes of the War of 1812 were the Napoleonic Wars, the Chesepeake-Leopard Affair, the Embargo Act, The Non-Intercourse Act, British instigation of the Indians, and the War Hawks. The declaration of war was inevitable because thus far there were too many tensions rising between France, Britain, and America to remain peaceful. It was not a mistake.

The real causes of the War of 1812 were three factors; the Napoleonic Wars, Chesapeake-Leopard "Affair", and the Embargo Act. The "war hawks" or war promoters were also a factor in the cause of the war. I don't think this war was a mistake, but I think we could have gone about things in a different way, because like Patty said, "it failed badly".

If you get right down to it, there are a whole lotta things that kind of snowballed into the War of 1812. For instance, conflict between Britian and France played a big part in it. As did that thing with the Chesapeake and the embargo and british occupation in the old northwest and that war goingon simultaneosly in Europe and mm hmm. No, I don't think war was mistakenly declared. But I don't think they were deliberate policies either. Just fit the circumstances.
