1) How did the following items create the poisonous political atmosphere of the early republic? XYZ Affair, Naturalization Act, Alien Act, Sedition Act, Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions.
They were all acts put forth to potentially hurt the opposing party. Instead of the candidates or presidents worry about how to better the country they worried about protecting their ass and staying in office. For example the Alien and Sedition Act made it alot harder for foreign people to become citizens. This was a big deal because people were coming to America for land and these people were Yeoman Farmers. They supported the Democratic/Republican party.
The XYZ affair made the U.S. want to declare war on France. The Naturalization Act made immigrants coming to this country have to wait 14 years to become citizens of the U.S. So that ment not many people were going to come to the U.S. The Alien and Sedition Acts were put in place to protect the U.S. from alien citizens of enemy powers and the Sedition Act took away freedom of speech and freedom of press. This infuriated the population. The Kentucky and Virginia resolutions were political statements to make states rights stronger. All of these things made a bad name for the new republic
I wouldn't say that these acts created a poisonous atmosphere I would say what jake said, the president was more focused on these acts or events rather than the country. I'm not saying that was the best thing. I think the Alien and Sedition Act effected the atmosphere the most, since both of these acts were taking away power or limiting the power from someone somehow.
Many of these acts were put in place just so a political party had the upper hand in American decision-making. The XYZ Affair enstilled anger in America causing us to want to go to war. The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions showed the opposition of political parties and how factions were starting to form in America.
I definately agree with what Tim said. I think that all these acts were established just to harm one party or the other to defend their own party. I think these acts were very wrong because the presidents/candidates were selfish about the whole thing and were making it hard on others; especially immigrants. The immigrants barely had much of any fair rights after they set these acts in place.
The Political leaders at the time were smart. Adams put some acts into place just to bennefit himself. For example, he put the Alien Act into place to stop immigrants from coming to America for land, because he knew that those people were generally yeoman farmers, who would support Jefferson.
The XYZ affair created a feeling of war hysteria that led to the Quazi-War. The Alien and Sedition acts were seen as unconstitutional, therefore, the government was seen as unconstitutional as well. These acts led to the creation of the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, which basically said that the states could determine whether or not the government was being constitutional (COMPACT THEORY)
XYZ Affair- animosity towards France Naturalization Act- TJ displays show of insubordination Alien Act- the feds were cheating dem reps out of voters Sedition Act- feds shut up TJ and Mad Jimmy KY & VA Resolutions- were seen as being conspiratorial
